Parted 1

2021

11” x 17” x 7”

pecan, mahogany, and steel

Parted 1 was created from a burl from the pecan tree pictured below. I found this tree while walking along Davidson Creek after a heavy rainstorm. The tree had been dead for some time, and the force of the wind caused the trunk to snap.  I removed the burl because I wanted to see what was inside. These burls usually contain intricate, twisted grain patterns that can only be seen when cut open. I had some general idea of what I would find, but I was surprised by the cavities in this piece. There can be great beauty hidden within something as ordinary as a fallen tree. I want others to share in the awe I feel when working with these pieces.
