Parted 3
2021
24” x 10” x 22”
oak, mahogany, and steel
Parted 3 differs from the rest of Unearthed because the aesthetic value is divided between the wood itself and its orientation. Also, the original piece did not come from Davidson Creek; instead, I found it while walking through the woods at the University of Dallas. I was fascinated by the texture and moss covering the outside. I could also see a sponge-like texture covering the surface. I wanted to know if the inside looked the same, so I cut the piece in half. The texture continued on the inside, but the piece was still missing the aesthetic I was looking for. I had to quarter the piece then focus on its orientation until it felt complete to me.
