I found the oak knot for Unearthed 1 next to the sculpture building at the University of Dallas. I was surprised to find this piece by itself without any other decayed oak logs nearby. This piece was half-buried in dirt and did not look like much at first. The grain pattern of this piece is what caught my attention. I peeled off the loose bark to expose the grain further and carved out the rotten areas. Most of Unearthed came from private property where the unrefined pieces cannot be seen by the public. This piece was next to a public walkway. I wonder how many people passed by this piece without paying it any mind.
